As a huge and I mean huge Gerritsen fan, I was excited to read her latest stand alone “Playing With Fire”. Unlike any of her previous work, this stand alone played tribute to past history in a way that was compelling, heart aching and thought provoking. 

The story is told from two perspectives; Julia (Present Day) and Lorenzo (The Past). Gerritsen effortlessly moves between both worlds and allows readers to envision both past and present settings as though you were standing there yourself. The additional history facts at the end are a wonderful edition and there are some recommended reads listed if you wish to delve further into the history.   

Known for her thrilling crime mysteries, I wouldn’t say this fits her usual style, or indeed that genre. However, I was compelled to finish the story and by the end felt quite emotional. A wonderful quick read from a brilliant author.
