Reading a book that has been hyped by so many other readers can often be a little disappointing. So, when I was looking at “Eeny Meeny” on my bookshelf, I kept leaving it to one side.
Well I finally decided to read it and what a read! The hype is real, M.J. Arlidge is a brilliant writer and DI Helen Grace is an intricate character that I cannot wait to find out more about.
I’ve seen a lot of reviews regarding the lack of character development in this book. However, in my opinion I found the author gave us all the information we required at the most prominent moments in the storyline. I personally found myself loving the characters and feel M.J. Arlidge gave us all we needed to know, when we needed to know it.
What did I love about this book? To start with I loved the strong female lead. I loved how she had an innocent darkness to her, but was determined, independent and forthright. I loved the short chapters. They were punchy, packed with information and action, and made me want to read faster. I loved the pace from start to finish. It was consistent and there was no lull in the middle.
My only criticism is I felt the ending of the book just stopped and could have done with a chapter or two for the team’s benefit clearing up the aftermath of the events that had just happened. Maybe that is because I enjoyed it so much, I didn’t want it to end, or maybe the next book in the series continues from where this left off. Either way, I am excited to read more from this author and if the rest of the series is just as good, I imagine M.J. Arlidge will quickly become an auto buy author for me.
Powerful opening novel, to what I expect to be a psychological thrilling series!
